In the early 1960s, facing the threat of rapid development and urbanization, a group of dedicated
conservationists convinced James M. Cox, Jr. to donate his Spring Running farm for the establishment
of an arboretum and laid the groundwork for the park district that would eventually become Five Rivers
. The group quickly recruited friends and advocates in the community to get involved, and
together they formed The James M. Cox, Jr. Arboretum Foundation in 1963.

For over five decades, the Foundation has helped guide the transformation of Cox Arboretum from a
worn-out farm into the beautiful facility that we enjoy today. The timeline below documents some of the
milestones in our history.
