School Partnerships

Cox Arboretum MetroPark hosted its first "Treemendous Day" in August 2010 as part of an on-going partnership with the Ohio State University Extension and Harold Schnell Elementary School in West Carrollton, OH. This day-long, school-wide learning adventure brought approximately 500 students to the Arboretum to take part in a variety of hands-on group activities led by their teachers. Numerous volunteers from Five Rivers MetroParks, the OSU Master Gardener program, and the Ohio Certified Volunteer Naturalist program were also on-hand to lend their assistance.

The Treemendous Day curriculum was designed to help students cultivate a relationship with nature and to teach them about the important role trees play in our environment. The day culminated with each group of students "adopting" a tree on the Arboretum grounds, which they will continue to monitor throughout their years at Harold Schnell to reinforce math and science concepts. The adopted trees include 40 specimens throughout the grounds and are denoted with special permanent tags.
